Honeymoon Cystitis

Honeymoon Bliss
How can you prevent, recognize, and treat bladder infections triggered by sex.

Here comes the bride, then there goes the bride...over and over and over again to the bathroom.

Honeymoon cystitis is a term used to describe a bladder infection related to frequent intercourse. It is caused by a bacterial infection, typically E Coli, which resides in the nearby gut. And sometimes, the playground can get too close for comfort leading to the bacteria being introduced into the urethra, the short tube between the bladder and the outside world.  Symptoms include urgency to pee, pain with or at the end of emptying the bladder, and a need to go frequently.

Ways to avoid honeymoon cystitis include peeing after sex and avoiding anal then vaginal penetration.  Lubrication may help prevent these to some degree, like Uberlube or KY (plain).  But once symptoms occur, antibiotics are needed to clear the infection and to prevent it from spreading to the kidneys.  So treatment should never be delayed, even if it means the honeymoon excursion leads to a doctor visit.

Some patients are more prone to frequent UTIs (urinary tract infections) and may require a single dose of antibiotic following sex to prevent the infections.  So a visit to your doctor before the wedding can be a proactive way to prevent this unwelcomed side trip to the ER or urgent care when you would rather be lounging by your love by the pool!
